If you're looking for a really stiffly built rod like a #12, you're probably angling for a bigger game fish: Northern Pike, Muskie, or Tarpon.

Most fly fishing is done for smaller species of fish, or mid level. Blue gill, crappie, grayling, trout, and bass are common species of fish that fly fishing anglers love to pursue. So watch the number, because that will determine if you have the right gear or not.

The one other number to look at the length of the rod. There are various choices and preferences, but for beginners slightly larger rods can help, as long as you're not in a really tight space. The length can make it easier to cast the fly line longer distances, and you can have better control without getting tired. The reverse is also true, though. If you are going to fish in a small creek with overhanging branches, then you will want a fly fishing rod that is smaller, as to avoid snags and snares.

Then the best advice is just to get out and fish! Like anything else, fly fishing is learned through practice. Follow this advice and you will find the perfect fly rod for your needs and you'll be out catching those fish in no time!

Fishing Line

Fishing can be done with the help of a hook, a line and a rod. Modern sport fishing can be classified into two categories; saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing. The most common strategies of fishing are called: bait fishing (often referred as still-fishing in North America and bottom fishing in UK), fly fishing and spin-fishing.

In bait fishing dead or live bait is fixed to a hook, with a small rod, a heavy line and a reel. The bait fixed to the bottom moves up and down attracting the fish. Normally branded fishing line lasts longer and the right line will always make you feel satisfied. Fishing line was made from linen, cotton and silk during early 1900's. These lines had washed, spooled and had to be spread out and dried thoroughly to prevent it from rotting.

While fishing in rough conditions pick a monofilament which is usually tough. For fishing in clear water select a clear, thin line. When fishing in undergrowth vegetation go in for thin and tough line and to avoid losing a big catch one must learn to fix the knots well.

Why Do I Need Another Fishing Rod?

Many anglers think that they can get by with only one fishing rod. While this may be true if you fish for the same species of fish in the same conditions all the time, who among us does that? If you're anything like me, you like to fish in rivers, lakes, and streams, while maybe even mixing in a touch of saltwater fishing. Fishing in different bodies of water, calls for different fishing rods. And what about different species of fish. The same rod shouldn't be used for trout fishing on one trip and the trolling for walleye on another. You need to have separate rods for separate situations.

For example, my favorite type of angling is trout fishing in a certain river in Montana. I spend 90% of my time fishing the same river. I ultra light fish for trout in this river, but do I have only 1 fishing rod that I use? No, I have two. I have a five foot ultra light rod for normal water conditions, but when the water is running high (which it does for 4 months out of the year), I use a six foot six ultra light fishing rod. You see when the water is high, the longer rod enable me to control my bait much better and also give me much better "feel". With my shorter rod, fishing in high water is a tone more difficult.

So even if you fish mainly for one species of fish, as long as the water conditions vary, and they almost always do, having a choice of rods is always a good idea. I'm not talking about having twenty different fishing rods, I'm talking about having four or five different fishing rods at your disposal. Just make sure that your not using the same rod for fishing for trout one day and catfish another. Your fishing gear, including your fishing rod, should be matched to not only the type of fish that you're fishing for, but also the conditioned in which you're fishing in. There's no reason to break the bank on extra fishing rods either. Quality rods can be easily found for $50 and less, each. I personally don't spend more than $50 for a fishing rod.

So, if you're one of those anglers who only have one fishing rod and like to fish, it's time to step up and have another option or two. The amount of fish you catch will be affected in a positive manner if you can match your fishing rod to the fish and/or conditions. Give it a shot, and see for yourself.

Ice Fishing Tips

For many anglers cold weather means not fishing, but for those anglers who enjoy standing on a frozen lake and looking through a hole in the ice, colder weather means one very important thing. Ice fishing. In this article I'm going to do my best to provide you with some practical ice fishing tips to help you be more successful.

For me personally, ice fishing, has always been a "band-aid" for not being able to fish normally, and it's also a great excuse for having a few adult beverages. But the bottom line is that I've done a lot of it over the years, and in the process learned a few tips. These tips will help you become a much more successful angler.

The first tip is to make sure you're prepared. Obviously fishing on the ice means that it's going to be pretty cold, so you must dress accordingly. The most important parts of your body to keep warm are your hands and feet. If either one of these appendages become too cold, your ice fishing trip will be over. Remember the old adage, that it's easy to take layers off, but more difficult to put them on. Bundle your hands and feet up, and if you become too hot, start taking layers off.

A great technique is to wear a pair of glove liners under your gloves, as a way of layering. This way when you need your fingers, you can take the outer gloves off and still have some protection. Glove liners are a wonderful idea for anyone who's going to spend an afternoon on the ice.

The next tip is to make sure you're fishing at the most opportune times. This simply means that you should be on the ice when the fish are going to be the most active. How do you know when the fish are going to be the most active? Simple. By paying attention to the weather and moon. These two factors play a huge role in the activity level of fish. Plan your trips onto the ice around the phases of the moon and frontal systems, and you'll catch more fish.

If you like to use bait while ice fishing, gang hooks are a great idea. You see, gang hooks are simply a pair of smaller hooks tied in tandem, which enable live bait to be presented in a totally natural way. And if you like to use synthetic baits while ice fishing, pre-tied gang hooks enable you present twice as much bait, effectively doubling your chances of a hook up. They are attached to your line using a small barrel swivel (size 10 or 12) which is all but invisible underwater. If you use bait of any kind, gang hooks should be a part of your repertoire.

These tips will make you more successful while ice fishing. How am I so sure of this? Because I know they work, because I've personally been using them for more than 20 years.
