Fly Fishing Basics - Learn to Pick the Right Fly Fishing Rod

If you're learning how to go fly fishing for the first time, there are several things you need to learn. One of the first things you need to learn about is choosing the right fishing gear and equipment. Not all fly fishing rods and reels are the same. The first thing you will need to learn is what type of specific fly rod you need.

Fly fishing rods are numbered, and the numbers represent how the rod is (strength-wise) built. A smaller number is designed for smaller fish, while a larger number is designed for bigger fish. So first thing you want to know is what type of fish you plan to be angling for. Are you angling for bass? For trout? Grayling? Salt water fish? Whatever your choice is, that should influence what type of a rod your want.

So if you're looking for your first fly fishing rod, a #4 will be able to handle something like rainbow trout, brook trout, and other similar species of fish. If you're looking for a really stiffly built rod like a #12, you're probably angling for a bigger game fish: Northern Pike, Muskie, or Tarpon.

Most fly fishing is done for smaller species of fish, or mid level. Blue gill, crappie, grayling, trout, and bass are common species of fish that fly fishing anglers love to pursue. So watch the number, because that will determine if you have the right gear or not.

The one other number to look at the length of the rod. There are various choices and preferences, but for beginners slightly larger rods can help, as long as you're not in a really tight space. The length can make it easier to cast the fly line longer distances, and you can have better control without getting tired. The reverse is also true, though. If you are going to fish in a small creek with overhanging branches, then you will want a fly fishing rod that is smaller, as to avoid snags and snares.

Then the best advice is just to get out and fish! Like anything else, fly fishing is learned through practice. Follow this advice and you will find the perfect fly rod for your needs and you'll be out catching those fish in no time!

Fishing Line

Fishing can be done with the help of a hook, a line and a rod. Modern sport fishing can be classified into two categories; saltwater fishing and freshwater fishing. The most common strategies of fishing are called: bait fishing (often referred as still-fishing in North America and bottom fishing in UK), fly fishing and spin-fishing.

In bait fishing dead or live bait is fixed to a hook, with a small rod, a heavy line and a reel. The bait fixed to the bottom moves up and down attracting the fish. This bait can also be reeled mid-depth to lure fish that are located centrally. Most of the time anglers attach a leader in between the regular nylon and the hook. They also make use of Dacron line so that in case the fish attempts to bit the line it can be averted. You will find fishing lines in different diameters and strengths. Fishing lines are chosen in accordance with the type and weight of the fish that one is going to catch.

The rod that is used for spin fishing is much longer than the bait fishing rod. The rods used for fly-fishing are about 3m or 10 ft high and these rods are much lighter than the ones used for spin fishing and bait fishing.

The flies that are used for dry fly-fishing float on the water; on the other hand flies used for wet fly fishing sink in the water.

Normally a 17cm long line consisting of a hook made from animals' bone which measures 3-4 cms is used. The bone holds on to the stick due to fiber string and bees wax that is used. The 1 m cord that is attached to the tip of the rod allows it be submerged and pulled out from the water when a fish is stuck to it.

Normally branded fishing line lasts longer and the right line will always make you feel satisfied. Fishing line was made from linen, cotton and silk during early 1900's. These lines had washed, spooled and had to be spread out and dried thoroughly to prevent it from rotting.

While fishing in rough conditions pick a monofilament which is usually tough. For fishing in clear water select a clear, thin line. When fishing in undergrowth vegetation go in for thin and tough line and to avoid losing a big catch one must learn to fix the knots well.

Why Do I Need Another Fishing Rod?

Many anglers think that they can get by with only one fishing rod. While this may be true if you fish for the same species of fish in the same conditions all the time, who among us does that? If you're anything like me, you like to fish in rivers, lakes, and streams, while maybe even mixing in a touch of saltwater fishing. Fishing in different bodies of water, calls for different fishing rods. And what about different species of fish. The same rod shouldn't be used for trout fishing on one trip and the trolling for walleye on another. You need to have separate rods for separate situations.

For example, my favorite type of angling is trout fishing in a certain river in Montana. I spend 90% of my time fishing the same river. I ultra light fish for trout in this river, but do I have only 1 fishing rod that I use? No, I have two. I have a five foot ultra light rod for normal water conditions, but when the water is running high (which it does for 4 months out of the year), I use a six foot six ultra light fishing rod. You see when the water is high, the longer rod enable me to control my bait much better and also give me much better "feel". With my shorter rod, fishing in high water is a tone more difficult.

So even if you fish mainly for one species of fish, as long as the water conditions vary, and they almost always do, having a choice of rods is always a good idea. I'm not talking about having twenty different fishing rods, I'm talking about having four or five different fishing rods at your disposal. Just make sure that your not using the same rod for fishing for trout one day and catfish another. Your fishing gear, including your fishing rod, should be matched to not only the type of fish that you're fishing for, but also the conditioned in which you're fishing in. There's no reason to break the bank on extra fishing rods either. Quality rods can be easily found for $50 and less, each. I personally don't spend more than $50 for a fishing rod.

So, if you're one of those anglers who only have one fishing rod and like to fish, it's time to step up and have another option or two. The amount of fish you catch will be affected in a positive manner if you can match your fishing rod to the fish and/or conditions. Give it a shot, and see for yourself.

Used Fishing Boats

Do you want to sell your used fishing boat? Then there are some important things to consider in order to attract potential buyers. First, you need to be aware of the competition. Remember that you will not only compete with other persons selling their used fishing boat but also with those who are selling new fishing boats.

To draw possible buyers, make sure that your used fishing boat is competitively priced. You can make its price a bit higher if it has more important features that other used fishing boats don’t have. And you can make it even more expensive if it possesses add-ons that can’t be found in new fishing boats.

You also need to advertise your used fishing boat properly and make communication simple and hassle-free. If you are going to sell your used fishing boat, be sure that you can be contacted for inquiry. You can have an answering machine or ask for a voice mail box from your phone company. Today, emails are the easiest and most popular way to contact a seller. Make sure to have one and check it daily.

The used fishing boat that you are selling should not be overpriced. Before pricing your boat, conduct research first to know the real value of your used fishing boat. If you don’t want to peg your boat’s cost between a low retail cost and average price, then don’t expect to get a positive response from buyers.

Bear in mind that clean boats can attract buyers. And even used fishing boats can be very nice if they are clean. So before selling your used fishing boat, clean it regularly. Make sure it is in tip-top shape when a potential buyer comes to inspect it.

To avoid headaches and other troubles, carry out or refer to a survey first before dealing your used fishing boat. Through a survey, you’ll know if the used fishing boat you are going to sell is in good condition. It will also let you know the things that need to be repaired. Majority of the banks ask for a survey before financing used fishing boats. If you conduct a survey before dealing your used fishing boat, you can surely be confident in the costing of your boat. Most importantly, know the best possible offer you can give for your used fishing boat.

Fly Fishing: A Worldwide Sport

Fly fishing is a great sport enjoyed by fisherman all over the world. This method of fishing requires artificial flies, and a rod that is very flexible. The sport of fly fishing has been around since at least 200 A.D. The first knowledge of the sport is found in books written during that time period. Today the sport remains very popular. Most people fly fish for trout, salmon, and bass.

Fly fishing differs from regular fishing because you don’t use a heavy lure and a light line. Instead, using a fake fly on the end of the line, you cast out a heavy line with a thinner leader on the end. Often a color of ribbon, thread, or fur is tied to the fly. This gives fish the impression that what they see is a bug that they eat. Fly fishing lines are much heavier than regular fishing line, but are often designed to float.

There are two types of fly fishing. Dry fly fishing involves the fly remaining on the surface of the water. Wet water fly fishing involves sinking the fly down into the water. Both methods are very effective. The use of the techniques is up to the person fishing and the circumstances.

Fly fishing is practiced throughout the United States and Canada. The most common states for fly fishing are Montana, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, California, and Alaska. This is because of the amount of fish flowing through the Rocky Mountain area. West Yellowstone is considered the major hub for great fly fishing. More fish are caught here than any other location. Areas of Canada including Alberta as well as other water areas throughout the world are great locations for fly fishing.

The Benefits of Inflatable Fishing Boats

Inflatable fishing boats are great yacht tenders/camping boats that are light enough to be carried in a backpack. Some 8-foot inflatable fishing boats are good for two and gear, and are large enough to float in moderate whitewater rivers. They can also be used as a large yacht tender. Inflatable fishing boats that are 9-foot long can carry enough gear for a long outdoor journey, and make a great fishing boat.

Most inflatable fishing boats fold small enough to be transported easily in a car trunk. They weigh around 40 lbs without running boards and are lightweight enough to be carried to nearby waterways. Inflatable fishing boats are really versatile. They are equally suitable for fishing, diving, or as a pleasure cruiser. In addition to versatility and despite their large size, inflatable fishing boats are very easy to row.

To make things more enjoyable, fit the Inflatable Fishing Boat with a small 4 hp motor and the craft will go around all day on just a gallon of gas. In places that ban gas engines, one could attach an equivalent electric motor. Whatever one’s purpose, from fishing to Class 3 whitewater running, inflatable fishing boats are up to the job.

Inflatable fishing boats are cheap and durable boats well-suited for weekend fishing or hunting and camping trips. They are compact, and can be carried to the water by a couple of people. Despite this, inflatable fishing boats are spacious and rugged enough to handle almost any conditions.

The prices of inflatable fishing boats vary from $30 to $450 depending on the size and number of running boards. For just a fraction of the price of a conventional boat, inflatable fishing boats give the user all the freedom needed coupled with unrivalled accessibility. Thanks to their lightweight and amazing compactness, one can get to those hard-to-reach favorite fishing spots.

Fishing on Your Pontoon Boat

Fishing on your pontoon boat can be both a relaxing and fun experience. Fishing from a pontoon boat can much more enjoyable than fishing on other smaller vessels. While fishing on a pontoon boat, you are often free from worries regarding the sturdiness of your vessel, or tipping the boat over while leaning in for larger catches.

Fishing on your pontoon boat is also often much more comfortable than fishing in smaller vessels. In between catches you can relax on the deck of your pontoon boat, or go cook a few filets on the on board grill.

When you fish on your pontoon boat, you can often go out fishing for the entire day, without leaving behind the small luxuries of home, such as a refrigerator to keep your lunch, and chilled drinks, and a stove to do some minor cooking, or to cook up a catch later in the day. You can even outfit your pontoon boat with a small restroom, making it so you have no need to go back to shore until your fishing journey is complete.

The size of a pontoon boat is also ideal for group fishing outings. With a pontoon boat several people can fish off of different sides of the boat without fear of their lines becoming entangled, or interfering with each other's fishing. Fishing with others on a pontoon boat can also help spread out the area in which you are fishing, and help make your entire fishing experience more enjoyable.

It is also easy to fish while on a pontoon boat with others who wish to engage in other activities about on the boat. Pontoon boats are often separated into several different sections, so that a section can be devoted solely to fishing, while another section be reserved for others to play games, dine, or participate in other activities away from where the fishing is occurring.

If you use your pontoon boat as a fishing vessel frequently you may want to outfit the boats with accessories, catered to your fishing style. You can purchase special holders for your fishing rod to attach to your favorite space, as well as a variety of other accessories to accent your pontoon boat and enhance your fishing experience such as custom seats. No matter what your style, a pontoon boat can help turn a day of fishing into a spectacular experience.

Fishing The Bahamas

The Bahamas are a great place to plan a vacation to. Located just southeast of Florida, visitors have the option of arriving here by plane or boat. The Bahamas provide so much for you to do with all of the water sports, beaches and night life.

Many people come here every year for the outstanding fishing. Fly fishermen have a blast fishing the flats for bonefish. There are many fishing guides that are available to fish for bonefish as well as many resorts that cater to bonefish fishermen. It really is a unique destination for catching bonefish on the flats and some believe it is one of the best places in the world to catch these fish.

If fly fishing the flats isn't your thing, hire a fishing charter and you can have an opportunity to catch a variety of offshore fish. Because so many anglers come here to fish the flats, the offshore fishing gets overlooked. Because of the location of the Bahamas, deep water access is very close to the 700 islands that make up this area. Many of the fishing charters do not have to travel very far offshore to put their clients on fish. Some of the offshore species that you will catch are mahi mahi, wahoo, kingfish, tuna and assorted billfish.

If you are planning a trip to the Bahamas, you will have a lot of options. There are plenty of hotels and resorts, numerous fishing charters, fine dining and many recreational activities to keep you busy.

Ice Fishing Tips

For many anglers cold weather means not fishing, but for those anglers who enjoy standing on a frozen lake and looking through a hole in the ice, colder weather means one very important thing. Ice fishing. In this article I'm going to do my best to provide you with some practical ice fishing tips to help you be more successful.

For me personally, ice fishing, has always been a "band-aid" for not being able to fish normally, and it's also a great excuse for having a few adult beverages. But the bottom line is that I've done a lot of it over the years, and in the process learned a few tips. These tips will help you become a much more successful angler.

The first tip is to make sure you're prepared. Obviously fishing on the ice means that it's going to be pretty cold, so you must dress accordingly. The most important parts of your body to keep warm are your hands and feet. If either one of these appendages become too cold, your ice fishing trip will be over. Remember the old adage, that it's easy to take layers off, but more difficult to put them on. Bundle your hands and feet up, and if you become too hot, start taking layers off.

A great technique is to wear a pair of glove liners under your gloves, as a way of layering. This way when you need your fingers, you can take the outer gloves off and still have some protection. Glove liners are a wonderful idea for anyone who's going to spend an afternoon on the ice.

The next tip is to make sure you're fishing at the most opportune times. This simply means that you should be on the ice when the fish are going to be the most active. How do you know when the fish are going to be the most active? Simple. By paying attention to the weather and moon. These two factors play a huge role in the activity level of fish. Plan your trips onto the ice around the phases of the moon and frontal systems, and you'll catch more fish.

If you like to use bait while ice fishing, gang hooks are a great idea. You see, gang hooks are simply a pair of smaller hooks tied in tandem, which enable live bait to be presented in a totally natural way. And if you like to use synthetic baits while ice fishing, pre-tied gang hooks enable you present twice as much bait, effectively doubling your chances of a hook up. They are attached to your line using a small barrel swivel (size 10 or 12) which is all but invisible underwater. If you use bait of any kind, gang hooks should be a part of your repertoire.

These tips will make you more successful while ice fishing. How am I so sure of this? Because I know they work, because I've personally been using them for more than 20 years.

Trevor Kugler is co-founder of JRWfishing.com and an avid angler. He has more than 20 years experience fishing for all types of fish, and 15 years of business and internet experience. He currently raises his three year old daughter in the heart of trout fishing country.....Montana!

Guided Fly Fishing Trips

Fly fishing is a specific type of fishing where a synthetic fly is used as bait. The “fly” is attached to the hook and swung over the surface of the water to attract fish. Moving the fly correctly in order to entice a fish to bite is one of the more difficult activities involved in fishing.

It is quite difficult to catch fish using flies, and fly fishing is an entirely different sport than standard fishing. There are two ways that a person can learn the skills and techniques needed to successfully fly fish. One option is to buy one of the many books that offers fly fishing instructions and advice. The advantage of books is that readers can learn at their own rate, focusing on particular techniques that seem particularly challenging. A major disadvantage to the books is that readers cannot watch someone else demonstrating the techniques. The other way to learn to fly fish is to take a guided fly fishing trip. A guided fly fishing trip features a trained guide who will teach participants the techniques needed to master this difficult activity.

A guide teaches students what type of fly and rod to use and the techniques to this sport. People who go on guided fly fishing trips learn to assemble their tackle, make appropriate knots, release a fish so that it can live to the next catch, and the basics of casting.

Fly fishing is rapidly becoming more popular, and it is easy to find a guided fly fishing trip for any experience level. It is a good idea to check the credentials of the guide in order to insure that the trip will be educational and fun.

What to Look For in a Fishing Rod

The most important tool without which you cannot even imagine a fishing excursion is a rod. In fact you may come across seasoned fishermen who are extremely choosy about their rods as they play the key role in catching fishes.

The rods can be made of various materials like fiberglass, glass or graphite. There is significant difference in the activity of these fishing rods. You can find extremely lightweight as well as heavy fishing rods.

Activity Factors of the Fishing Rods

The properties of fishing rods are quite important in judging the quality of the rods. The action capacity is measured by the extent of bending when pressure is applied at the tip of the rod. The time that is taken to accomplish this action is also an important feature.

Some of the bass fishing rods are pretty swift. The rods made of fiberglass are the lightweight ones wherein the graphite rods are the faster and more efficient ones. The ones with high power of action and low profile are considered to be the best in the market.

There are surf rods that are longer than the general rods and are used while fishing in huge lakes and ponds with many other people. There are other two types of fishing rods like land based and shore-based fishing rods.

Properties of Fishing Rods

There are certain features of fishing rods that contribute a lot in its efficiency. The power of a rod is all about the strength of it. The stronger is the fishing rod, the capacity of lifting fishes with higher weight increases. The heavy fishing rods are solely made for fishing in the heavy and muddy water bodies like stagnant pools and ponds.

The light and slender rods are suitable for fishing in the clear and open source of water like rivers and streams. Then the cork that is attached to the handle of a fishing rod is another important part. It needs to be extremely lightweight and the grip of the handle has to be good enough so that you can hold it tightly even when your hands are wet.

The cork quality improves with the improvement of the quality of the rod. The cork is also responsible for letting you know the vibrations of the rod tip.

If you are an amateur then you should seek some advice from a seasoned fisherman before buying a fishing rod for yourself. Make sure that you get some practice with the fishing rods or else it will be tough to handle them while fishing in a river or a lake.
